King of Kings and Lord of Lords

Dispensationalists don’t believe that Jesus is reigning now as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Indeed, to them, the Christian church age is but a “parenthesis of history.” They think Jesus’ kingdom reign only happens in a literal thousand-year millennium sometime in our future. The gospel has failed and an earthly political kingdom is necessary―despite Jesus’ insistence that his kingdom is not a worldly one (Luke 17:20-21; John 18:36). At that time Jesus sits on a literal throne in literal Jerusalem ruling the world by legal proclamation (“with a rod of iron”). They think that Satan is ruling the world now.

This seems like an astounding conclusion for any professing Christian, and a horrendous insult to our Lord—especially since the Bible teaches that Jesus is indeed reigning NOW as King of Kings and Lord of Lords (1 Timothy 6:15; Revelation 17:14; 19:16). Further, we do not wait for a future kingdom of Christ as it has already been delivered to believers (Colossians 1:13). Here are some Bible verses about the present and forever reign of Christ:

“I will raise up your offspring after you, one of your own sons, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for me, and I will establish his throne forever.” (1 Chronicles 17:11-12)

“For us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore.” (Isaiah 9:6-7)

“His dominion is an everlasting dominion. . . and his kingdom shall not be destroyed.” (Daniel 7:14)

“And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and earth has been given to me.” (Matthew 28:18)

“And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” (Luke 1:33)

“The Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son.” (John 5:22)

“Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out.” (John 12:31)

“As for the word that he sent to Israel, preaching the good news of peace through Jesus Christ (He is Lord of all)” (Acts 10:36)

“For He must reign until He has put all his enemies under his feet.” (1 Corinthians 15:25)

“and seated Him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And He put all things under his feet and have him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.” (Ephesians 1:20-23)

“He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son. . . . He is the image of the invisible God. For by Him all things were created. . . . And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. . . . For in Him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through Him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven.” (Colossians 1:13-20)

“He who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of Kings and Lord of lords.” (1 Timothy 6:15)

“He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of His nature, and He upholds the universe by the word of his power.” (Hebrews 1:3)

“But of the Son He says. . . You are the same and your years will have no end.” (Hebrews 1:8-12)

“He holds the priesthood permanently.” (Hebrews 7:24)

“He who is born of God protects him, and the evil one does not touch him.” (1 John 5:18)

“And from Jesus Christ ‘the faithful witness,’ the firstborn of the dead, and ‘the ruler of kings on earth. . . to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever.” (Revelation 1:5-6)

“They will make war on the Lamb, and the Lamb will conquer them, for He is Lord of lords and King of kings.” (Revelation 17:14)

“On his robe and on his thigh He has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.” (Revelation 19:16)
