Melding Old and New Testament Judgment Prophecy: Outline for Bible Study

Luke 21:22 “These are the days of VENGEANCE to fulfill all that has been written.”

Discussion: How do futurists deal with this passage? What time period were “these” days according to Jesus, given the context of Luke 21, especially verse 32?

Deuteronomy 27-32 as the foundation of all Bible prophecy.  There would be a time, in the last days, when Israel would break their side of the covenant and be destroyed:

  • IF they are not obedient— 28:1, 15, 58; 30:16, etc.
  • Breaking of the covenant foretold — 31:16
  • Covenant breakers will be destroyed — 28:20, 33, 45, 48, 61
  • YHWH to take VENGEANCE on Israel for her disobedience — 32:35 (ref. Hebrews 10:30 in which Deuteronomy 32:35-36 is quoted concerning the soon coming Day of the Lord per Hebrews 10:26 and 37). See also Deuteronomy 32 vss. 41 and 43. Compare further Isaiah 61:1-2 and its fulfillment in Luke 4:18-19.
  • When would these things happen?—at their “end”/”latter end” — 32:20, 29 (cf. to “end” in Matthew 24:3, 14)

Perverse/Crooked/Twisted generation of Deuteronomy 32:5, 20. Jesus told the Jews of his day that THEY were the perverse generation (Matthew 12:38, 39, 42; 16:4; 17:17; Luke 9:41; 11:29-32). Peter and Paul both echoed the theme of the perverse, crooked, and twisted generation (Acts 2:40; Philippians 2:14).

Compare Deuteronomy 32:43 with Matthew 23:35-36 (ref. Matthew 21:43, 45 — take the kingdom from the Jews and give it to others = changing of the covenant, cf. Hebrews 8:13)

Compare Matthew 23:35-36 to Revelation 6:10; 16:6; 17:6; 18:24; 19:2.

All of the prophets had Deuteronomy and referenced it when they spoke of the “latter days”). Consider Daniel 12 “The Time of the End” (Daniel 12:4, 9, 13) when the power of the holy people would be shattered (Daniel 12:7) and the burnt offering would be taken away (Daniel 12:11).

Compare “abomination of desolation” of Daniel 12:11 to Matthew 24:15. Note “this generation” Matthew 24:34.

Compare Daniel 12:4 with Revelation 22:10.

Compare Malachi 3:1-5; 4:1, 5 to Matthew 3:7, 11, 12. (John the Baptist was “Elijah” according to Jesus in Matthew 11:14, etc.)
